The Napoleonic Code (1804) is the French civil code, established under Napoléon I. Even though the Napoleonic Code was not the first legal code to be established in a European country, it is considered to be the first successful codification. It strongly influenced the law of many other countries. With its stress on clearly written and accessible law, the Code was a major step in establishing the rule of law. Historians have called it one of the few documents that have influenced the whole world.
It was adopted throughout much of Europe. Napoleon himself said, "My true glory is not to have won 40 battles..., but what will live forever is my Civil Code." It spurred the development of bourgeoisie society in Germany by expanding the right to own property and breaking feudalism. Napoleon reorganised what had been the Holy Roman Empire, made up of more than a thousand entities, into a more streamlined forty-state Confederation of the Rhine, providing the basis for the future unification of Germany into a German empire in 1871. The movement of national unification in Italy was also precipitated by Napoleonic rule in the country. These changes contributed to the development of nationalism and the nation state.
